Sponsors, sites and review boards: who is who

A study record names several kinds of organization. Understanding the cast helps you see who is responsible for what.

The short version

  1. The sponsor starts and funds the study; it can be a company, university or agency.
  2. Sites are the places where participants take part; investigators lead the work there.
  3. An institutional review board reviews a study for ethics and participant protection.

Sponsor

The sponsor is the organization responsible for starting and managing the study. It might be a pharmaceutical company, a university, or a government agency.

Site and investigator

A site is a hospital, clinic or research center. The principal investigator is the person who leads the study at that site and answers to the sponsor and review board.

Review board

An IRB, or ethics committee, reviews a study before it begins and while it runs, with a particular focus on participants’ rights and safety.

Where we fit

We are none of these. We only publish general information about how they work.
